how to remove algae from siding

4 Reasons Wet & Forget Outdoor is the Perfect Vinyl Siding Cleaner

Vinyl siding protects and beautifies your home, but it can fall victim to ugly growths such as moss, algae, lichen, mold and mildew. Cleaning your siding can be a real pain when it means struggling with a pressure washer, or trying to bleach the algae without bleaching your clothes or killing the lawn.

But keeping your siding beautiful doesn’t have to be difficult! Cleaning vinyl siding is a snap with Wet & Forget Outdoor.

Just ask Gilbert and Carol S. of Dayton, Ohio, who got the beautiful results you see in the photo with just one application of Wet & Forget Outdoor.

Read on to learn about 4 things that make Wet & Forget Outdoor perfect for your vinyl siding.

1. Safe

Ugly growths on your vinyl siding can be so tough to get rid of, you can feel tempted to attack the stains with both barrels. The problem is, some cleaning methods can cause unintended damage as they remove the stains.

Caustic chemicals such as bleach can ruin your clothing, kill your grass, and even corrode your downspouts. One wrong move with a pressure washer can tear gutters or downspouts loose, harm your siding, or break windows.

Wet & Forget Outdoor is not only algae’s worst nightmare–it’s also peace of mind in a bottle for you. Wet & Forget’s gentle strength defeats algae, lichen, moss, mold and mildew on your vinyl siding without damaging your home.

It’s non-caustic formula won’t kill your lawn, either, which can happen when you use harsh chemical cleaners. To avoid any temporary browning due to overspray, just wet adjacent plants with clear water before and after applying Wet & Forget.

When you clean your vinyl siding with Wet & Forget Outdoor, the stains need to be worried–you don’t.

2. Easy

Cleaning vinyl siding can’t get easier than with Wet & Forget Outdoor. Just spray and walk away to annihilate green or black algae, moss, lichen, mold or mildew.

No scrubbing, pressure washing or elbow grease required!

Here’s how to:

  1. To apply the Wet & Forget Concentrate, mix 1 part Wet & Forget Outdoor with 5 parts water in a pump-up garden sprayer. To apply the Wet & Forget Hose End, attach the bottle to your garden hose and attach the sprayer tip of your liking (Fan tip is best for large surfaces, jet tip is best for reaching high elevations).
  2. Spray the solution onto the affected area of siding.
  3. Allow for 4 to 5 hours’ drying time before the threat of rain.
  4. Relax, and let Wet & Forget Outdoor do the work for you!

To treat moss, be sure to soak the moss thoroughly so that the solution can reach the root-like structures. To treat lichen, follow these special instructions.

3. Zaps Ugly Stains

Whether you’re dealing with stubborn moss, multi-layered lichen, ugly black or green algae, or disgusting mold and mildew, Wet & Forget Outdoor will defeat the stains and leave your vinyl siding looking beautiful. Wet & Forget Outdoor works with the wind and rain to gradually remove stains over time.

No matter which of these growths you’re dealing with, the stains don’t stand a chance when you choose Wet & Forget Outdoor!

4. Keeps Working

Not only does Wet & Forget Outdoor remove these ugly stains, it also keeps them from coming back for a year or more in most cases. When you use bleach or a pressure washer to remove algae, lichen, moss, mold or mildew, the ugly nuisance can start to grow back immediately after you put the cleaning supplies away.

Wet & Forget Outdoor’s gentle formula keeps working with the wind and rain even after the stains have disappeared, to keep them from coming back.

Gilbert and Carol S. in Ohio are experiencing this firsthand. They treated a severe case of green algae on their vinyl siding with Wet & Forget Outdoor last May, and they just sent us this recent “after” photo to show us how beautiful their garage still looks, 10 months later!

“We couldn’t be happier with the results,” Carol told us, “thank you, Wet & Forget!”

Keep your vinyl siding gorgeous with Wet & Forget Outdoor, and the next time you see your neighbor struggling with the pressure washer, please be kind and tell him your “secret” for a beautiful home!

I bought wet and forget at Costco thinking I could spray it on my siding with a hose sprayer. After reading the precautions I am nervous about using it especially since I would have to spray above my head so much. Do you have any suggestions for spraying an entire house with W&F.

      Hi Cynthia,

Wet & Forget is best applied with a garden pump sprayer. If you have a very large area, the backpack pump sprayers are fantastic. Unfortunately Wet & Forget cannot be applied with a hose-end type sprayer as this will over dilute the product too much leaving you with no results. I don’t recommend applying above your head as you don’t want to be under constant over spray so I would suggest a ladder or using a power washer with the product. To apply Wet & Forget with a power washer, be sure you’re pulling from a pre-mixed container and apply heavy. Wet & Forget works with the wind and the rain to gently clean the surface over time. Let us know if you have any other questions.

May we use Wet&Forget when rain is not in the near future and just sprinkle the house with a garden hose?

      Hi Jana,

If you’re not receiving any rainfall, keep the cleaning process going by spraying down your house with the hose on a jet setting. This will help remove the dead growth that is still on the surface.

I see in your q&a that wet and forget can be used on any type of siding, but I didn’t A specific reference to using it on painted hardy plank. i’m sure it won’t damage the hardy plank, but is it safe for the paint that is on the hardy plank? if It is safe to use on painted hardy plank, you might want to be specific about that in your literature. thanks.

I hope that someday W&F will come up with a solution to attack and destroy artillery fungus, which has become a real nuisance. It is incredibly difficult to remove and halt it’s growth and advancement.
Please advise if any of your products would help to mitigate it’s progress or eliminate it completely!
    Many thanks,

Applied wet & forget to my vinyl siding and it is stained and blotchy. will this disappear over time or will i have to take a siding scrub brush to it and try to remove it? it looks terrible even after a week.

Hi Robert! This is likely caused by the growth dying off on the surface, as it can change colors as it dies off. Over time the rain and wind will remove this from your siding. You can also rinse your siding periodically with a hose on a jet setting to help this process along.
