Summer DIY Backyard Projects
Everyone should have a backyard they are proud of. Adding your own personal touch makes that backyard barbecue or relaxing night under the stars that much more memorable. Creating your own utopia can cost quite a bit when buying retail, but here are some summer DIY backyard projects that can turn your old, plain backyard into a wonderland.
Customized Coolers
You’ll usually find a cooler at most backyard parties. Coolers are usually plastic or styrofoam eyesores that are less than desirable.
Some DIYers have come up with clever ways to dress them up and even give them a dual function. If you don’t want to spend big bucks on a customized cooler, you can build one quite easily.
Here are a few different options that will get your creative juices going!
Serving Trays
There is no better indication that it’s summer than iced cold lemonade being served on a beautifully decorated serving tray. Serving trays can be pricey, but creating it yourself is extremely inexpensive, and you can add your own personal touch.
First, find a piece of wood you wish to use as the tray. It can be square, rectangle, or circular- the options are endless.
Decorate the piece of wood with paint, stain, or ceramic tile. Make sure you chose a material that will be level once finished so food and drinks won’t tip over.
To extend the life of your outdoor serving tray, add a protective coat such as polyurethane.
The final step is deciding that type of handles will finish off your new tray. Drill holes on opposite ends of your tray and add leather straps, rope or metal handles for the final touch!
Here’s a collection of serving trays for inspiration.
Cinder Block Planters
A fun, organic way to create your own planters is by using cinder blocks. You can be as creative as you like or leave them natural- it’s up to you!
Cinder block planters can be stacked creatively -vertical, horizontally, or even diagonal. Once you finalize the layout of your planters, it’s time to prep them for soil.
An easy solution for the base is hardware cloth. Cut the hardware cloth into a plus sign, fold the pieces to form a basket, and put them inside the cinder block.
Then, you are ready to start adding your potting soil. Be sure to keep your soil 3″-4″ from the top of the cinder block to allow enough room to plant your flowers, herbs, or succulents.
Finally, the fun part- adding the flowers! However, consider the location of your cinder blocks when choosing your plants- is it full sun, part sun, or shade?
Glow in the Dark Rocks
Landscape lights, lanterns, tikis, and fire pits are all the norm when it comes to adding light to the backyard for summer nights. Spice up your backyard with something new, like a glow-in-the-dark section or path.
Simply spray paint or paint any kind of rock with glow-in-the-dark paint and arrange them in your backyard for a fun, nighttime addition. Furthermore, place them around trees, line your landscaping, or create a path.
So, use glow-in-the-dark paint, and you’ll be the talk of the neighborhood.
