Selling Your House? Avoid These Outdated Home Décor Trends
If you’re thinking about selling your house and want to re-decorate, remember to avoid these four outdated home décor trends.
1. All-white kitchens
Although an all-white kitchen never goes out of style, shoppers may notice any grime, scratches, or bumps from daily use. For some buyers, an all-white kitchen, although bright, may seem cold and clinical.
If you have an all-white kitchen, then there’s nothing to distract the eye from small blemishes on cabinets and countertops.
Refresh an all-white kitchen by:
- Painting the ceiling a bright color. Sky blue is a good choice.
- Adding natural elements to your kitchen. Use reclaimed wood to refresh kitchen drawer fronts or cover a wall.
- Incorporating organic elements and neutral shades for a farmhouse feel.
- Choosing handmade tiles for a kitchen backsplash. Choose a unique tile material, like one made of terra-cotta or cement.
- Switching out cabinet hardware from bright white to a modern design- like a matte black finish.
2. Brass fixtures
As the years pass, your brass fixtures can lose their luster. The finish tends to look a little weathered.
Although some homeowners prefer the weathered look, it may also make the kitchen or bath look dated.
- Upgrade your kitchen or bath fixtures by switching to brushed nickel, stainless steel, gunmetal, or brushed gold finish.
- Try incorporating touchless faucets. They are more modern and on-trend.
- Update your old brass light fixtures with a new design in winter gold, silver, brushed nickel, or bronze finishes.
3. Exit the Edison bulb
Edison bulbs are decorative incandescent bulbs designed to look like early tungsten filament bulbs. Although they add a vintage feel, they aren’t as energy-efficient as LEDs and CFLs.
Edison bulbs produce eye glare and a yellowish light that is unappealing to some. Moreover, they use more energy and produce less light, making them inefficient and expensive to use.
Also, the filaments are fragile, so Edison bulbs aren’t the best choice for active families.
Switch out Edison bulbs for LED versions with a vintage look. LEDs are available in decorative spirals or coils that emulate the early tungsten bulbs.
These new LEDs are made of amber-colored glass and emit a warm glow. You’ll still have antique charm plus modern efficiency without the outdated home decor look.
4. Out-of-style Accent Walls
That purple accent wall that your teenager loves may not appeal to potential buyers. If you have boldly painted accent walls or dark walls, then it’s a good idea to repaint them.
The best paint colors are light, neutral tones like off-white, grey, and beige. Light colors give your home a sense of spaciousness. Remember, the goal is to appeal to most home shoppers.
Consider covering an unfashionable accent wall with wallpaper. Choose a contemporary pattern in neutral tones to give a room designer appeal.
Did you know? Most home buyers with children shop for a home in spring. Why? They have more time to get accustomed to their new home and neighborhood before the school year starts. However, even those without kids find that spring is the best time to move.
