5 Outdoors-Inspired DIY Nature Home Décor Ideas

Reflect the rustic beauty of the outdoors in your home with DIY nature home décor. Add a calm, restful feeling to your home by bringing the outside in. You can easily find beautiful, natural materials while strolling your neighborhood park or looking at your backyard.

See below for five nature-inspired DIY home decor ideas you can make.

Decorate with Earth Tones & Textures

Add an organic aesthetic to your abode by decorating with earthy colors. Incorporate colors from nature, such as; moss green, acorn brown, golden tan, and ivory.

These colors will evoke the feeling of being outdoors.  To achieve a textured natural look, include one or more of the following elements in your DIY decor ideas:

  • Fallen Branches – Give fallen twigs and branches a fresh look by spraying them with white, black, metallic, or brightly colored spray paint. Display on a bookcase or living room table to serve as a unique accent piece.
  • Candles – Wrap a cream-colored pillar candle with twine. Wrap the twine around the candle twice and finish with a bow to give it a rustic look.
  • Succulents – Make an earthy planter by wrapping a succulent terracotta pot in jute rope. Or place a succulent into a shiny vintage silver or copper vessel.
Use Nature as Art

There are a wide variety of options for adding nature as home decor in your home.

Here are some other DIY nature home decor ideas:

Look for weathered finds in interesting shapes. Coastal elements like a twisted branch, driftwood, or smooth pebbles can help add visual interest to a room.

Furthermore, furniture in weathered wicker or a whitewashed finish emits a just-in-from-the-sun vibe.

Bring a botanical touch to your indoor spaces with artwork of flowers, nature prints, or plump pillows in a delicate flower motif. The simplest way to do this is to fill a vase with your favorite type of freshly cut flowers.

However, if accents of flowers aren’t your thing, a small glass terrarium filled with plants and greenery to make an earthy display atop a stack of gardening books.

If you’d like to add a rustic look to a room, you can incorporate antlers (natural or faux) in your decor. Mounted antlers are available at flea markets or estate sales.

Another creative way to showcase natural objects is to set out a rustic bowl or tray to display shells, colorful river rocks, or geodes. Decorating your home with objects found in nature, such as flowers, is a great way to breathe life into an indoor space.

Add Greenery to Your Home

Add moss to your terrarium.

Enhance your nature-inspired home decor by using natural moss. Live moss, grown indoors, will add a green, nod-to-nature touch to your home decor. You can purchase moss at your local garden center or online. You can also harvest your own live moss from nature.

How to harvest and decorate with live moss, and what you’ll need:

  • A mason’s trowel, metal spatula, or any flat-bladed garden tool
  • A container
  • Potting soil
  • Crushed stone
  • Optional: decorative rocks

Step 1: It’s best to harvest moss immediately after it rains to ensure the plant is hydrated. Before digging, remove any loose leaves, twigs, or debris from the moss.

Step 2: Choose your container. Moss thrives in a shallow layer of soil and can be grown in a wide range of natural containers such as a hollow log, a terrarium, hollow tree bark, or seashells.  Add a thin layer of crushed stone to the bottom of the container for good drainage.

Tip: Amazingly, moss can defy gravity. It can grow vertically, up the side of a terracotta pot or a stone wall.

Step 3: Add a thin layer of potting soil on top of the crushed stone.

Step 4: To gather the moss, slide the tool underneath the mound. Collect a thin layer of soil along with the plant. Also, lift the moss into small 4-inch by 4-inch sections for easy transfer.

Step 5: Place the live moss on the newly prepared soil and water thoroughly.  Furthermore, add decorative rocks if you’d like.

Step 6: Lastly, water or mist the moss daily to encourage new growth. Keep the soil moist, but be careful not to over-water.

Note: Most mosses grow best in partial shade. Pay attention to how your moss responds to the light conditions where you’ve placed it, and move it if it doesn’t seem to thrive.
