Restyle Your Bath with These Top Bathroom Vanity Ideas
Thinking about restyling your bath? If so, there’s a lot to consider – materials, styles, cost, etc. You may also want to keep in mind how much under-sink storage you will need. Here are our best bathroom vanity ideas, tips, and how-tos.
Consider Square Footage
Bathroom vanity makers offer a wide range of vanity sizes, widths, and lengths, which can be confusing. Here are a few general guidelines:
- Vanities with cabinets may be as narrow as 18 inches (single basin) up to 72 inches (double basin vanity).
- The countertop height will usually range from 30 inches to 36 inches.
- Vanity depth is approximately 21 inches.
Consider Vanity Height
To choose the proper height, consider who will be using the vanity. Is the vanity for a child’s bath? Will it be used by a family member in a wheelchair? If so, you may want to consider a shorter vanity (less than 32 inches). Most bath designers recommend an approximate height of 34 to 35 inches for grooming comfort.
Note: Keep in mind local codes. In some areas, the center of the toilet should be a minimum of 15 inches away from the side of the vanity or an adjacent wall. Keep this measurement in mind.
Bath Vanity Materials
Acrylic
Sometimes called “solid surface” material, acrylic vanities often come with the sink pre-molded into the countertop. Furthermore, acrylic is inexpensive, durable, and water-resistant. Make sure your acrylic-topped vanity is stain-resistant before you buy.
Plywood
Plywood consists of layers of wood glued together to make sheets of plywood. This type of vanity is sturdy and usually moderately priced. Plywood material is usually more affordable than solid wood versions and is just as durable.
MDF
Medium-density fiberboard (wood fibers compressed with resin) is an affordable cabinet material. Sometimes called engineered wood, MDF must be sealed to protect surfaces from moisture.
Solid Wood
High-end vanities often feature natural, solid woods. Although beautiful, this material option is usually more pricey compared to other options.
A vanity labeled as ‘solid wood’ may be:
- 100% natural wood of one species
- A solid hardwood manufactured of various hardwoods
While natural wood is an attractive choice, it isn’t the best material for a constantly humid bathroom.
Stone
Stone vanities (granite, marble, quartz) create a luxe, high-end look in a bath. Vanity tops made of stone are very moisture-resistant and durable, but they can be expensive.
Consider Moisture and Durability
If your bath vanity will need to stand up to plenty of splashes and humidity, it’s best to choose a water-resistant or waterproof option.
Strength and Durability
How much traffic will the bath get during a typical day? Will the vanity be installed in a children’s bath? Will it need to stand up to roughhousing?
Bathroom Vanity Storage
Most bath vanities come with cabinets and drawers for holding beauty and grooming essentials. Also, keep in mind the under-sink storage space may be limited by the underside of the basin and the pipes.

Home repair expert Bob Vila mentions, “The main consideration when it comes to choosing a bathroom vanity is the people who will be using it the most. Those with loads of supplies to stow or minimalists with just a few products? Pint-size family members or full-grown adults? Once you have a solid sense of the users, it will be easier to select the size, style, and material of the ideal vanity.”

Console Vanity
Console vanities have cabinets and/or drawers just below the sink. They also have an open bottom shelf for storing folded towels or displaying a plant or other bath decor. Console vanities may not be the best choice if you need plenty of storage.
Wall-mount Vanity
Wall-mounted vanities appear as if they ‘float’ above the floor. Wall-mount vanities attach to the wall and offer a modern, clean look. Wall-mounted vanities are a perfect choice when floor space is limited.
Corner Vanity
Corner vanities have small footprints and are often used in small baths. This vanity style is recognized by a smaller sink and minimal counter space. Corner vanities also work well in half baths or baths with minimal square feet.
Freestanding Vanity
A popular trend is a bath vanity crafted from repurposed furniture. Furthermore, an antique dresser, vintage nightstand, or other furniture pieces can be transformed into an attractive, one-of-a-kind vanity. A DIY vanity can be created from nearly any sturdy item that can accommodate a sink and hardware.
The newest trends in vanity design include:
- Cabinets with tilt-out laundry hampers
- Vanities that look like furniture (antique dresser)
- Open shelving for additional storage
- Medicine cabinets with built-in magnifying mirrors, lights, or a television
Choosing a bathroom vanity is a matter of available space and your personal style. Keep these bathroom vanity ideas tips in mind and you’ll find a vanity that is perfect for you and your family.
