The Perfect Fall Garden Additions
The weather may be cooler, but that shouldn’t be any reason to stop planting flowers and veggies. Continue to make the outside of your home stand out with these perfect fall garden additions that last through the colder months!
Key Lime Mums
The classic chrysanthemum, commonly known as the “mum,” is a beautiful flower to plant during the fall. Mums add lovely color to your backyard.
However, if you’re tired of the same old red, orange, and yellow flowers, then check out key lime garden mums! This electric color intensifies areas outside your home, including your patio, flower beds, planters, etc.
These mums are small to medium-sized, which makes a perfect fit when adding around other decorations. If your pumpkins, cornstalks, and scarecrows are looking a little bare, then add a touch of this chartreuse-colored flower.
This plant provides the perfect garden backdrop for festive decorations- especially during the Halloween season!
Snaptastic Snapdragons
A fun group of flowers called the snaptastic snapdragons are another must-have for this fall season! This is a new series of flowers that produce long-lasting colors, available in pink, magenta, red, orange flame, and yellow.
What’s great about this series of flowers is that they produce well in the spring and the fall. They have strong stems and roots, which is great for lateral growth.
Additionally, snapdragons look great planted in flower pots, hanging baskets, and planters.
Veggies And Herbs
The fall is actually a great time for growing your favorite vegetables and herbs! By gardening in the fall, you can avoid pesky insects and have cooler gardening weather.
Kale, broccoli, cabbage, and spinach are just a few of several vegetables that tolerate cooler weather; they also taste a lot better too!
Here’s a USDA Freeze Map, which shows the approximate amount of time your area will first freeze. This will be helpful for knowing how long your harvest season will last.
Fall is also a prime time for planting the hardiest herbs. Not only can you grow herbs outside but inside as well.
Instead of growing herbs in a garden, make it easier and grow them right from your kitchen! Put together an assortment of herbs like parsley, cilantro, thyme, and sage in a mini pot.
In a couple of weeks, your herbs will be ready to go, and you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite fall meals!
Pumpkins
What is the fall season without pumpkins? Try your hand at planting and growing pumpkins!
Plant your pumpkin seeds from late May to July so they’ll be ready for harvest in the fall. Additionally, pumpkins grow best in hardiness zones 3-9.
When planting for your harvest, place them in a sunny location in your garden because they tend to grow best in full sun conditions. And, give them lots of room to grow- about 4-5 feet between the plants.
Moreover, plant pumpkins in well-drained and compost-rich soil for the best pumpkins. Simply water once a week while avoiding the foliage and plant itself.
When it’s time to harvest, make sure the rind is hard before cutting the pumpkin from the vine.
Camellia Sasanqua Shrubs
Continue the summer colors into fall with a camellia sasanqua shrub. As the weather cools, this plant will start to show its true colors with brilliant, pink blooms.
Although, the color ranges from white to light pink to bright cherry red.
This shrub is a great addition to any yard because it’s drought-resistant and easy to care for. Camellia sasanquas tend to grow best in hardiness zones 7 to 10.
However, if you live in a cooler climate, consider growing them in a container. That way, they can be transported inside during the winter months.
It’s important to note that these make for beautiful, cut flowers. So, cut a few off the bush and display them around your home.
