FAQ: How Does Wet & Forget Compare To Other Outdoor Cleaners?

Wet & Forget is different than most traditional methods of cleaning. The most significant difference is, once applied, you let Mother Nature to do the rest. There’s no scrubbing, rinsing or power washing. Wet & Forget’s gentle formula works with the wind and rain to break down the growth and wash it away. Wet & Forget thoroughly cleans the surface for superior results and a longer residual than many traditional outdoor cleaning methods.

Q: How does Wet & Forget compare to other outdoor products?

A: Wet & Forget has a pH of 8 which is close to neutral (7), most traditional moss, mold, mildew and algae products have a pH of 11, 12 or 13. Every point increase in pH represents a 10 fold increase in alkalinity, so a pH of 12 is 10,000 times more alkaline or caustic.

This means Wet & Forget will not damage the surface when applied. This benefits the environment. We are not rinsing the product into the environment as it stays on the surface and breaks down from there. Another significant factor is that the application uses substantially less water, saving as much as one hundred gallons versus using a pressure washer or traditional cleaning chemicals that need to be rinsed from the surface. In fact, in most cases where water restrictions are in place, Wet & Forget is still able to be applied.

The active ingredient in Wet & Forget is Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride. Consumers probably already have this ingredient in their homes in the form of an anti-bacterial wipe or a similar product. Unlike these products, Wet & Forget contains a danger warning on its label because the product is a concentrate with 9.9% active ingredient. When diluted for application it is only 2% active.

We believe Wet & Forget is significantly easier on the environment than traditional moss, mold, mildew, & algae products that contain active ingredients such as bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite), ammonia (Hydrogen Nitride), caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide), lye, TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) etc., which will damage the surface they are applied to, if not rinsed quickly, and will harm the environment when they are washed into it.

Wet & Forget Moss Mold Mildew And Algae Stain Remover should only be used on exterior surfaces. For indoor surfaces we have a weekly shower cleaner and an indoor mold and mildew disinfectant cleaner. Wet & Forget Shower // Wet & Forget Indoor

I sprayed my very mossy outdoor brick pavers with bunnings product ’30 Seconds. A week later, the bricks are still somewhat moSsy/algae. Can I now spray again with wet and forget? Or is there a problem using 2 different types of PRODUCT? 30 second’s active constituent is 99g/l benzalkonium chloride.
    Thanks

      Hi Toni,
Wet & Forget will absolutely take care of your mossy brick pavers. I would make sure to thoroughly rinse the bleach off of the pavers that was applied previously before applying Wet & Forget. The next day, you would be fine to apply Wet & Forget to properly clean the pavers.

Wet & Forget will take care of the black mold, mildew stains, algae stains, and moss. Apply a good heavy amount to the surface and leave it. Over time, the growths will start to biodegrade and either the rain or rinsing with a hose on a jet setting will help remove the dead growth until it’s completely gone.

      Hi Martin,
Wet & Forget will absolutely clean lichen on asphalt shingles. For best results, apply a good heavy amount of Wet & Forget to the lichen and leave it. After fifteen minutes, you want to then re-apply so that the Wet & Forget can get into the root system of the lichen. After this second application you do not need to do anything else except have a little patience for Wet & Forget to do it’s job 🙂

We have a badly infected terracotta roof of 50 years and we use this roof for drinking water. Is Wet & Forget suitable for using on a roof that collects drinking water?

    1. Wet and Forget

      Hi John,
Yes, you can use Wet & Forget to clean your terracotta roof. Please follow the specific instructions listed below for roofs that drain into a cistern.

1.) Disconnect the water supply to your cistern for at least 5 weeks after applying Wet & Forget to avoid any chance of contamination.
2.) Be sure that you have several rainfalls over the “stand down” period to wash the Wet & Forget from the surface.
3.) Check before reconnecting that the water flowing onto the ground, when it is not raining, is NOT foaming.

How long does it take for Wet and Forget to remove the black stains in outdoor carpeting? I killed the mold but still have the stains. How long do I need to wait to wash down with a hose? The carpeting is on a stairway of a houseboat.

    1. Wet and Forget

      Hi Kathy,
Black stains can take 6-8 weeks to clear up. To help speed up this process, we recommend going back about a week after your application and spraying the surface with water from a hose on a jet setting. If you repeat this periodically it will help clear up the stains on your outdoor carpeting.

How long should I wait after applying wet and forget on a deck before I re-stain.

    Reply
    1. Wet and Forget

      Hi John,
Once the surface is clean of growths you can then re-stain your deck. If you have a green growth or lighter growth you can start to see results in about a week or two. If you have a black growth or heavier growth you can start to see results in about a month or two.

can this product be used as a preventative after cleaning? We have cleaned our deck and would like to know if this will prevent the regrowth of mildew over the summer.

      Hi Kristine,

Wet & Forget will take care of any organic growths on the surface (moss, mold, mildew, algae, and lichen), as well as the stains from them. It is not designed as a preventative, however since Wet & Forget cleans the surface properly it can keep growth away for about 12 months.

We recommend applying Wet & Forget to the surface then coming back a week later and rinsing the surface with a hose on a jet-setting. We also recommend repeating the rinsing process periodically to imitate rainfall on the surface which will remove the dead growth from the underside of the eaves.
